About Graduate Studies at MIRARCO and L.U.

MIRARCO welcomes applications from high-quality student researchers who wish to join our team. Click here for the Application Form. Our scientists and engineers invite you to browse this site and discover the benefits of researching with MIRARCO.

MIRARCO provides an excellent research environment for both students and post-doctoral fellows because of the knowledge that it provides, as well as its geological setting in the Sudbury Basin, and its cutting-edge technology. MIRARCO offers many world-renowned supervisors to students while they complete their thesis research. A number of grad students stay on with MIRARCO and are key contributors in helping the company expand.

Each year MIRARCO and its centres sponsor and work with highly qualified Laurentian University Masters and Ph.D. students to provide innovative research opportunities in the following disciplines:

Students may be eligible for funding via scholarships and research assistantships.
NSERC recipients are eligible for a matching research stipend!

Laurentian University provides a unique environment for students who wish to complete their School of Graduate Studies. LU is a relatively small University in Canada. This size is of benefit to students, because it allows for close interaction with professors and easier access to high-tech equipment.

Students who wish to do their thesis research at MIRARCO can also complete their studies at a cross-appointed University. Current universities include the University of Alberta, the University of Toronto, and Queen's University.

Here are some of the types of opportunities MIRARCO can provide, along with the various research fields where opportunities exist.

  1. Graduate Research Program (M.Sc. & Ph.D)
MIRARCO gives you a window to national and international liaisons in Resource Sector R&D, including geomechanics, geotechnical, and geo-environmental fields. Thesis work is carried out at Laurentian University in GRC's high-tech laboratory, in the field, and in the Virtual Reality facility, giving you hands-on industrial experience. For a list of Graduate Research Studies at Laurentian University please visit Research Centres.

  2. Student Internship Program
Internship programs are for students who have graduated from an accredited university or college within the last 3-5 years. The internship lasts from 4 months to one year, and may lead to full-time employment. Internship programs may be available in the following areas:
    • Computer Systems and Software Development
    • Mining and Civil Engineering
    • Technology Development
    • Environmental R&D

  3. Summer Projects
Summer projects and temporary positions offer undergrad, masters, and Ph.D. students opportunities for skill-building experiences and beneficial contacts with industry. Gain experience in mining software design and testing, laboratory research, and on-site fieldwork. As well, networking opportunities will provide career-enhancing contacts with a variety of industrial resources.

  4. Temporary Positions
These positions range from three to 12 months, offering an excellent range of experiences and the opportunity to work within a university/research institute environment. The projects involve testing, monitoring, software development, and hands-on fieldwork.

  5. Careers
MIRARCO and its partners offer career paths in engineering, geomechanics and geotechnical fields, with flexibility, challenge, competitive wages, and unique multi-disciplinary research teams.

  6. International Visitors - Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs)
MIRARCO offers a unique work environment for international visitors and Post-Doctoral Fellows. Qualified applicants with compatible, funded research programs are most welcome to join our teams and can expect operational assistance to conduct their research at MIRARCO.

Research Fields

Enhanced Visualization and Optimization

Virtual Reality has hit the mining industry. For the first time ever, MIRARCO is bringing to the stage the only virtual reality facility in the world that specializes in mining and mineral exploration applications.

Are you interested in a mining post-grad degree with a strong IT component? Are you modelling, monitoring, or using huge datasets? Then this program is for you! Access the Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL), complete with a 22-foot wide stereographic 3D projection system.

Not into mining engineering? No problem. This facility has many other applications for post-grad and industry research, including:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Geology
  • Kinesiology
  • Ergonomics
  • Urban Planning
  • Architecture
  • Telemedicine
  • Virtual reality safety investigations
  • Scheduling and simulation techniques for mining
  • Development of long-term mine planning tools

Geomechanics and Mine Design

Underground mines are very unpredictable - the more you mine, the more the rock stresses and structures change! This directly impacts the mining methods used, the amount of ground support employed, and the impacts on a company, in terms of economics and safety.

The Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC) offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. students an incredible opportunity to join a team that has been researching in this field for more than a decade. Our renown rock mechanics experts aren't afraid to challenge the status quo, resulting in innovative, unique solutions to rock mechanics problems.

Do you think outside the box? Consider a post-grad degree with GRC, and be part of our success story.

Environmental Monitoring and Rehabilitation

Identifying and minimizing industrial impacts on the environment is at the heart of the Environmental Monitoring and Rehabilitation (EMR).

Do you have a passion for finding out what is in our water, air and soil? Do you want to be a part of the solution that will impact the way we treat the environment? Do you have an interest in working with the mining community to help provide answers and direction for tomorrow's industrial waste practices?

Then consider EMR. There is no better place to research environmental monitoring and rehabilitation than in Sudbury, Ontario. Surrounded by hundreds of lakes, and in the heart of a mining community, EMR is the ideal centre for environmentally-minded Masters and Ph.D. research.
