- The Climate Adaptation at MIRARCO is dedicated to assisting communities and sectors adapt to climate change through the provision of climate science and adaptation tools. The Centre is also a resource hub for researchers and stakeholders searching for activities, events and resources on climate change impacts and adaptation.
AREAS OF EXPERTISE
- Within the Province of Ontario and beyond, OCCIAR’s aim is to effectively communicate the science of climate change (including current and future impacts); encourage the development and implementation of adaptation strategies in order to reduce climate vulnerability and increase resiliency; develop tools to assist with adaptation; and create and foster partnerships with stakeholder groups to advance adaptation.
- OCCIAR has extensive experience working with a broad range of organizations, including federal, provincial, and local governments, First Nations, professionals (e.g. engineers, planners and consultants), researchers, industries and community organizations. Working with this wide variety of stakeholders, OCCIAR develops and delivers climate change impacts and adaptation resources throughout the province. The Centre also strives to create new relationships with different agencies and institutions to facilitate and enhance adaptation planning through mainstreaming of climate change into decision-making processes.

Assessing Climate Change Vulnerability in Northern Parks
With funding from Parks Canada, this project will develop and apply a standard vulnerability assessment process to complete vulnerability assessments for important social and ecological values in three Arctic national parks: Tuktut Nogait National Park in the Northwest Territories, Ukkusiksalik National Park and Auyuittuq National Park in Nunavut. Even though each ecosystem and community will respond to climate change in different ways, there is an underlying standard process, driven by Inuit Knowledge (IQ) that can be used to tailor vulnerability assessments to the unique conditions of each national park.
Climate Change Adaptation Planning within the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation Reserve
With funding from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, OCCIAR is partnering with the Georgina Island First Nation to develop a climate change adaptation plan for their community. Combining aspects of Traditional Ecological and Community Knowledge and a vulnerability assessment approach, this project will help the Georgina Island First Nation deal with the current and future impacts of climate change in their community.
Economic Impacts of Extreme Weather and Climate Change on Communities
This project, with funding from FedNor, is aimed to better understand the damages associated with extreme weather and climate change over the next 25 years in Northern Ontario. The primary outcomes from the project are a replicable method for estimating the economic impacts of extreme weather at the community level, data and information to inform development and prioritization of risk reducing measures, and case study results to help businesses and communities assess and manage financial impacts from changing weather and climate.
Ontario Climate and Agriculture Assessment Framework
With funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, this project will use a suite of landscape, bioclimate and management criteria and indicators to develop and pilot a regional framework to assess baseline and future agroclimatic vulnerabilities, risks and opportunities. This project will result in a framework that is transportable (across regions), translatable (for use with different commodity types and production systems), and functionally expandable (especially for climate change analytical and data management requirements) to inform Ontario agrifood policy.
Ontario Regional Adaptation Collaborative (RAC) II
Building on the fist Regional Adaptation Collaborative (RAC I) and Innovative Risk Management Tools (Tools) program, Natural Resources Canada has developed a new Regional Adaptation Collaborative (RAC II). RAC II will operate from 2012-2016 with the Ontario RAC II being hosted at OCCIAR. The goals of the Ontario RAC II are to: enhance adaptation action in Ontario’s northern communities and key resource sectors including mining, forestry, and energy; strengthen existing adaptation networks in Ontario to build adaptive capacity and bolster adaptation planning and action; and strengthen Ontario’s knowledge in areas of Measuring Progress and Adaptation Economics. Overall, the Ontario RAC II will encourage the mainstreaming of adaptation into policy and business decision-making in Ontario.
The Climate Change Adaptation Community of Practice
OCCIAR hosts the National Climate Change Adaptation Community of Practice. The Community is an interactive online community dedicated to advancing knowledge and action in the area of climate change adaptation. The Community serves as a location where climate change researchers, experts, policymakers and practitioners from across Canada can come together to ask questions, generate ideas, share knowledge, and communicate with others working in the field of adaptation.
